kirkpatrick Macmillan was born in 1812 in Dumfrieshire. He had a variety of jobs when he was young but later he started working with his father in 1824. At  the time he wanted a hobbyhorse and he decided to make one for himself. Later, he wanted to try to move the hobbyhorse. He made his new machine in  1839.

The first pedal bicycle was propelled by a horizontal movement of the riders feet on the pedals. The machine was extremely heavy and he required physical effort to ride.

His next challenge was to ride 68 milles to Glasgow in June 1842. The trip took  two days .

Kirkpatrick Macmillan didn't patent his invention and he made no money with it.
